Kia Carnival Recall (2026): Fuel Leak Fire Risk & Your Rights

Kia carnival recall 2026 fuel leak

In April 2026, Kia announced a Kia Carnival recall for 141,032 vans, due to a fuel leak that can cause a fire. Two strong NHTSA advisories come with it: “Do Not Drive” and “Park Outside.” These aren’t minor. They signal a real safety issue.

If you own or lease a 2022–2026 Kia Carnival, you should know your options. We’ll walk you through who’s affected, the defect details, what to do about the advisories, how repairs work, and what California lemon law can mean for you.

How to Know If Your Kia Carnival Is Part of the Recall

If your Carnival is a 2022–2026 made during certain production periods, it may be part of this recall. The best way to confirm? Check your VIN with NHTSA or Kia. This is NHTSA Recall No. 26V232. It’s also called Kia recall No. SC368.

Kia says 141,032 vehicles could be involved, but only about 1% may have the defect. Covered vans were built from January 4, 2021 through November 20, 2025.

The details include:

  • All 2022–2025 model-year Carnivals built on or before November 19, 2024
  • Some 2025–2026 model-year Carnivals with engines built before November 19, 2024 (that date is when Kia changed the engine torque spec)

You can review the full information in the NHTSA Part 573 Safety Recall Report.

Keep Recall Numbers Handy

  • Kia recall No. SC368

How to Check Your VIN

  1. Go to nhtsa.gov and use the recall lookup. VINs became searchable on April 24, 2026.
  2. Type in your 17-character VIN.
  3. See if any recalls are listed.
  4. If you see SC368, call Kia Customer Care at 1-800-333-4542 or a Kia dealer.

What’s Behind the Kia Carnival Fuel Leak Problem?

Carnival vans may have high-pressure fuel pipe nuts that loosen over time. When that happens, fuel leaks. Any leak raises the risk of a fire if there’s a spark. This started with a problem on the engine assembly line.

The issue was insufficient or incorrect torque on the cross-over pipe nuts. Kia fixed this on the engine line on November 19, 2024.

What’s the Cross-Over Pipe?

This cross-over pipe (part No. 35307-3NGA0) moves fuel under high pressure. When its nuts loosen, fuel can escape. If fuel leaks near a hot part, fire risk goes up.

What’s the Torque Problem?

Some nuts were fastened incorrectly at the factory. Over time, vibrations can loosen them further. The fix in 2024 means build date matters for newer vans.

What Do “Do Not Drive” and “Park Outside” Mean for You?

These advisories mean you should take the fire risk seriously. Limit driving. Park away from homes or buildings until you fix your van. NHTSA adds both advisories because a leak can catch fire.

Problem, breakdown, consequence. You expect your van to be safe and reliable. Then a recall notice arrives. It tells you not to drive and to park outside. That raises real questions about safety. We look at fuel-leak recalls closely. So should you.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Smell of fuel or gasoline
  • Check engine light switches on
  • Visible leak under your vehicle
  • Any new fuel-related problem after parking or driving

No Smell? Still Check

The pipe can loosen before you smell fuel. If you don’t notice a smell, that doesn’t mean all is clear. Your VIN recall status and a dealer check matter even if everything seems fine.

How Kia Will Handle the Recall Fix for You

Kia dealers will check your van’s fuel pipe for free. If they find a leak, they’ll replace the pipe. If there’s no leak, they’ll re-torque the nuts for free. Inspect, repair, or replace. All covered.

What Happens at the Dealer

  • Dealer checks the high-pressure pipe
  • Leak found? They replace the pipe
  • No leak? They fasten the nuts again

Dealers were notified April 13, 2026. Owner letters went out June 2, 2026.

Paid for Repairs Before? You May Get Reimbursed

Kia filed a General Reimbursement Plan on May 1, 2024. If you paid for related repairs, keep your receipts and repair orders to ask for a refund.

Does California Lemon Law Apply If the Recall Repair Fails?

Yes. A recall doesn’t rule out a lemon law claim. If your van still has problems, the repair takes too long, or Kia can’t fix it after a reasonable number of tries, you may have more options. Repair and lemon law aren’t the same. Read more in How Car Recalls Can Affect Lemon Law Claims.

What a Recall Repair Doesn’t Cover

  • Time you can’t use your van
  • Repeated trips to the dealer
  • Lost value and trust in your vehicle
  • Ongoing or unfixed safety issue

How the California Song-Beverly Act Can Help

If Kia can’t fix your van’s warranty problems after a fair number of tries, you may get a buyback or replacement. For fuel leaks, the law may count fewer repair attempts.

You could get back your payments. Some get a civil penalty up to twice their damages if the violation is willful. Kia pays us under the law, not you.

FAQs: Your Top Questions about the Recall

Does a recall mean my Kia Carnival is a lemon?

No. A recall by itself doesn’t make a vehicle a lemon. But if repairs keep failing or take too long, you may qualify.

Can a leased Carnival be covered by lemon law?

Yes. If your lease fits the requirements and warranty, you’re protected.

What about a used Kia Carnival?

Yes. If you bought it in California and the warranty was active when the problem started, lemon law may help.

Should I keep paying if my Carnival is waiting for a recall repair?

Yes. Don’t stop payments without talking to a lawyer first. Missed payments can cause trouble.

Is The Barry Law Firm linked to Kia or NHTSA?

No. We’re an independent California lemon law firm.
