When Consumer Reports evaluated Jaguar’s 2024 F-Pace, the consumer watchdog organization said it expected the 2024 F-Pace to be less reliable than other new cars based on Jaguar’s brand history. Within months, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall of the 2024 Jaguar F-Pace in June 2024 because the oil filter housing can crack and leak oil into the engine compartment, which could cause a fire.
Resources like J.D. Power and RepairPal note that Jaguar owners can encounter problems with engines, brakes, and electronics, which contribute to high maintenance costs and reliability concerns.
If you own a Jaguar, you may feel like your Jaguar spends more time in the shop than on the road. You should know about the California Lemon Law and how it protects consumers with defective motor vehicles. As a subsidiary of Tata Motors, Jaguar Land Rover falls under California Lemon Law protection, which requires a motor vehicle manufacturer to buy back or replace a vehicle that qualifies as defective.

A Rundown of California’s Lemon Law and Jaguar Vehicles
California’s Lemon Law says a vehicle is defective if, after a reasonable number of attempts, the repair work cannot resolve a problem that:
- Is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty,
- Substantially impairs the use, value, or safety of the vehicle, and
- Is not caused by unauthorized or unreasonable use of the vehicle.
A reasonable number of repair attempts can vary from case to case. If the defect poses a significant danger, under California Lemon Law, two or more attempts to fix the problem are typically considered reasonable. If the problem is less severe, manufacturers may be entitled to more than two attempts to fix the problem. In certain circumstances, if your vehicle is out of service for an inordinate amount of time your vehicle may automatically qualify as a lemon.
The Lemon Law applies to “Every manufacturer of consumer goods sold in this state and for which the manufacturer has made an express warranty.” This includes Tata Motors, one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world and owner of the Jaguar line of vehicles. There are dozens of Jaguar dealerships in California operated by Tata Motors subsidiaries Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC and Jaguar Land Rover North America LLC.
Defects that may be the basis of a Jaguar Lemon Law claim or Land Rover Lemon Law claim include the following:
- Engine problems
- Transmission problems
- Electrical problems
- Brake problems
- Steering problems
- Air conditioning problems
- Fuel system problems
- Other persistent performance problems.
Defects Experienced with Jaguar Vehicles
Jaguars are known to have several issues common to various models of the vehicle, including:
- Engine issues: These include failures of the water pump, turbo, crankshaft, and timing chain.
- Transmission issues: These can cause trouble when changing gears and switching between modes and lead to grinding sounds when shifting. Some newer models have closed transmission systems that require new fluids around 60,000 miles but don’t have dipsticks, making it difficult for consumers to check the fluid levels on these vehicles.
- Ignition coil failure: The ignition coil provides sparks to all cylinders of the engine so the fuel will combust. An ignition coil failure can cause the engine to misfire and run poorly.
- Electrical issues: These may include faulty and wrong signals to the sensors and onboard computer.
- O2 sensor failure: This can cause a check engine light to appear on the dashboard.
- Brake system issues: Failure of the brake pressure accumulator makes the brake pedal feel unresponsive.
- Coolant system issues: Coolant leaks and system issues are common in Jaguars because the plastic coolant reservoir tends to crack. Eventually, a coolant leak could lead to the engine overheating.
- Driveshaft issues: Early automatic F-Pace models built before mid-April 2016 may have a too-short driveshaft that can fall out and disable the vehicle.
Jaguar Recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued several recalls of Jaguar vehicles. In addition to those below, you can search for Jaguar recalls on the NHTSA safety recalls webpage by using the vehicle’s VIN (vehicle identification number).
Jaguars recalled for safety issues include:
- 2021–2023 E-Pace. Jaguar recalled these vehicles due to the possibility of the passenger airbag tearing during deployment. A torn air bag may not protect the occupant in a crash and could also burn them with hot gases. Jaguar dealers will replace the passenger airbag module for free.
- 2019–2024 I-Pace. Jaguar recalled certain models of this vehicle because of a risk of thermal overload in the high voltage (HV) battery. This could lead to smoke or fire, which could injure occupants or people outside the vehicle.
- 2020–2021 F-Pace, 2021 XF, and 2021–2022 F-Type. Jaguar recalled these vehicles because the automatic locking retractors on the seat belts may deactivate early, preventing the child restraint system from securing properly.
- 2023 Jaguar I-Pace electric SUV. A manufacturing defect in these vehicles may cause the vehicle’s floor pan to crack, which could increase the risk of a seat malfunctioning in an accident.
- 2021–2024 Jaguar I-Pace electric SUV. A vehicle’s turn signal is supposed to blink faster if components become worn or are about to fail. In these vehicles, the flash rate frequency may not adjust to warn the driver.
