The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) subject to recall and a safety warning because its high voltage (HV) battery may ignite a vehicle fire. If you own or lease a 2020-2024 model year Jeep Wrangler 4xe affected by the battery recall, don’t recharge it. Park it away from anything that can catch fire, and contact your local Jeep dealership about fixing the problem.

In cases where the dealership can’t fix the warranty-covered issue even after multiple attempts, you may also be able to file a Lemon Law claim. The Barry Law Firm can help you pursue a Lemon Law claim to have Stellantis, the Jeep’s manufacturer, repay your purchase price plus other related costs.

Our Lemon Law attorneys can do the work required for you to demand the money you’ve spent toward buying or leasing a lemon at no charge to you. After a successful Lemon Law claim, the vehicle manufacturer is required to pay all attorneys’ fees and costs. The Barry Law Firm will never bill you.

Issues with the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Battery

A defect in the 400-volt battery pack found in certain Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid electric vehicles could lead to a vehicle fire whether the vehicle’s ignition is on or off, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall notices. Such a fire could cause property damage and even serious injuries.

The initial Jeep battery recall notice issued in November 2023 covered as many as 32,125 Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEVs made in model years 2021-2023. A second recall issued in September 2024 covered 118,230 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV vehicles.

Stellantis began investigating two reports of 2021 model year Jeep Wrangler PHEVs with fires originating from the HV battery in May 2023. Between May and September 2023, the automaker received five additional reports of fires originating from the HV battery in 2021-2022 model year Jeep Wrangler PHEVs. Stellantis, identified in the recall notices by its prior name, FCA US, says it is aware of two injuries but no motor vehicle accidents related to Jeep 4xe fires.

The 2024 recall identifies what they suspect is the root cause of the issue, stating that the recalled Jeeps may have battery packs with cells that are “susceptible to separator damage.” A software update used in early attempts to correct Jeep 4xe battery problems proved ineffective.

Owners of affected vehicles should contact their local Jeep dealerships to get it fixed. The dealership should update the Battery Pack Control Module (BPCM) software and replace the HV battery, if needed.

If You Have a 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Park Outside!

The Jeep 4xe recall notices advise precautions in case a faulty Jeep 4xe HV battery ignites and causes a fire. Vehicle fires can cause injuries to both occupants and anyone outside the vehicle, along with property damage. The risk is lower when the battery is depleted, so the manufacturer advises owners not to recharge their car. They also suggest that owners park away from structures and other vehicles until the issue is fixed. Parking outside can prevent a fire from spreading or causing further damage.

Other Common Jeep Wrangler 4xe Problems Owners Are Facing

Owners of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe may also be in danger of unexpected engine shutdowns as they drive their vehicles, which is a potential safety hazard. Jeep issued a recall in December 2022 to address engine shutdown issues in certain 2021-2023 Wrangler 4xe models. The remedy the manufacturer provided was a calibration software update.

In 2024, NHTSA also launched a recall query into Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles made in model years 2021 through 2024, which includes 94,000 vehicles. The investigation comes after 68 reports of “loss of motive power” in the Jeep hybrid model. While some of these reports come from vehicles covered in the 2022 recall, the majority are for vehicles that were not included. The query will determine how severe the shutdown defect is and whether the remedy for the previous recall was effective.

What Should You Do If You Suspect a Safety Concern in Your Vehicle?

If you suspect a safety concern in your Jeep Wrangler 4xe, reach out to the dealership where you purchased it to ask whether there are any open recalls affecting your car and have your vehicle’s problem repaired. You can also check for recalls with the NHTSA online or by calling their Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

At the NHTSA recall search site, you can enter a license plate number or VIN to learn whether a specific vehicle needs to be repaired as part of a recall. Searching a vehicle’s year, make, and model will give you general results about recalls, investigations, and complaints.

You can also report a safety problem to NHTSA and file a complaint.

Can You Make a Lemon Law Claim for Your Jeep Wrangler 4xe?

California’s Lemon Law requires manufacturers to buy back vehicles with serious problems that begin while under the manufacturer’s original warranty. A vehicle may qualify as a lemon if it has warranty-covered defects that the manufacturer cannot fix after a reasonable number of repair attempts.

A reasonable number of repairs can vary from case to case. If the defect poses a significant danger, two or more attempts to fix the problem are typically considered reasonable. Manufacturers may be allowed more than two attempts to fix less severe issues. In certain circumstances, your vehicle may automatically qualify as a lemon if it is out of service for an inordinate amount of time.

You may have a Lemon Law claim if:

  • Your Jeep 4xe has a significant problem affecting its safety, usability, or resale value.
  • The manufacturer’s original warranty covers the issue.
  • You have repeatedly tried to have the manufacturer — usually through an authorized dealership — repair the problem, and they have failed to do so.

While the Jeep battery recall doesn’t automatically make your car a lemon, it could qualify if it meets the other requirements.

There are several steps to a Lemon Law claim, which The Barry Law Firm can help you with. In the end, most California Lemon Law claims require a lawsuit. When it comes to fighting against major auto manufacturers, such as Stellantis, you’ll want an experienced Lemon Law attorney on your side.

What Will a California Lemon Law Claim Recover for Your Jeep Wrangler 4xe?

California has one of the nation’s strongest and most consumer-friendly lemon laws. Here’s what you can seek in a Lemon Law claim:

  • Vehicle costs: The manufacturer may be ordered to “buy back” your vehicle, which includes a refund of your down payment, monthly payments, and the remaining vehicle loan balance.
  • Collateral costs: This includes sales or use tax, license fees, registration fees, and other official fees required to buy or lease a new vehicle and put it on the road.
  • Incidental costs: You could be refunded for expenses associated with your vehicle’s defect, such as fees for towing, alternative transportation, and attempted repairs.
  • Attorneys’ fees and expenses: After a successful claim, the court will order the manufacturer to pay your legal expenses. It costs you nothing to engage our legal help to pursue your California Lemon Law claim.
